EREC Castles on the Air (COTA) Weekend 14th & 15th June 2014

Vince Bobin (G1FBH) from the Eastbourne Electronics and Radio Club sent us an event notice for their forthcoming Castles on the Air event which will take place on the 14th and 15th of June.

Update: Vince has just informed us that Ofcom issued EREC with their call-sign for the CotA event which will be GB2PCS. It sounds as though HF will be dominant at the site but visiting amateurs are welcome to bring along VHF and/or UHF SSB if they so wish and will be accommodated for in the tent. Electricity for the weekend has been kindly provided by the landlady. Meeting is at 0900 Saturday with operating to start at 10am and finish up around 6pm. Sundays start will be a tad later at around 0930. Antennas on site will be a Windom, G5RV, half-wave 7.1mhz vertical and a Buddipole. Vince also notes that operators may be short on the Sunday so if you are available and feel like getting on the air please stop by and op or log for a while.

—- start

Eastbourne Radio & Electronics Club will once again be out running a Special Event station for this weekend at Pevensey Castle. While we will not be in the castle grounds we will be operating from opposite the main entrance to the castle in the square right next to the Royal Oak and Castle Public House.

We intend to be active from 1000hrs to 1800hrs on both days. On the Saturday setup time will be 0900hrs. This is an open invitation to any HERC members who would like to come and visit (or perhaps even operating/logging etc.). We could not have chosen a better location to operate from.

Right next to a pub that does food and not far from the local conveniences and a beer garden! There is plenty of car parking available in the adjacent car park.

We will have mainly HF operating, but we have opened up an invitation to anyone within the clubs that wants to do some 2m/70cms SSB working with their own SSB rigs and antennas. Mains electricity will be available on site for the whole weekend. Remember that Sunday is the PW QRP Contest so there will be a lot of VHF activity about.

Please come and visit us even with your family. You can pack the wife and kids off to go round the castle while you play radio!

If you need any further information or want to get involved please contact Vince (G1FBH) via email at canavp@gmail.com

—end

As yet EREC are still waiting on Ofcom to authorise the special event call-sign but this will be available shortly.

In the meantime take a look at a few pictures of the attractive site where EREC will be holding their Castles on the Air event.

Hastings Hospital Radio Station club visit August 30th 2014

The Conquest Hospital radio room is fairly easy to find. Club members should go up one floor from the main entrance to the fourth, turn right and go through two sets of doors and wait in the conference room.  The radio station will be open to us from 12.30pm to 4.30 pm.

The idea is for visitors to chat to HRH members whilst awaiting their turn to visit the studio, which can only accommodate a few at a time due to its size. Refreshments will be available in the conference room. It has been agreed that members may bring along one guest if they wish.

Yearly subs renewal reminder

This is just a polite reminder to a small number of members who have allowed their club membership to lapse and as such, Ron Deeprose the clubs Treasurer and Membership Secretary would like to follow this up to ensure that they continue to receive their monthly copy of Vital Sparks and renew their membership should they wish to do so.

New and existing re-newing members can print the clubs membership form and send it through to Ron using the details below or contact him to discuss the matter if you wish.

Parking fee increase for BBQ Field Day

Rob M0LYD the Vice Chairman has just brought it to my attention that there is a price rise at Fairlight where the club holds its annual Field Day BBQ. The new car parking fee is £2 for the day, a rise of £1 over the previous charge which while a substantial increase also means that it has been very reasonable in years gone by.

So cram as many people as you can in your car along with your radio gear and don’t let the increase put you off. It will be a great day up at Fairlight this year and we hope to see as many of you there as possible for an enjoyable time on the air amongst fellow enthusiasts.

Here are a few pictures taken at the 2013 Field Day BBQ below where fine Summer WX stood up for the entire day. Suncream, caps and shade were certainly required!

RSGB Special Events for June 2014

There are some interesting special events this month starting off today1st of June with the Binche radio club in Belgium who will be operating with the call ON44WAR near to what used to be Hitlers bunker. They will be using both phone and CW modes and operating on vintage rigs on 40m. QSL will be via ON7RY.

Fans of aviation as I am and having visited Duxford on a number of occasions in past years will be pleased to hear that they will be operating GB2IWM on 6 June to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day. The Duxford Radio Society, based at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, Cambridgeshire will be operating on most of the HF bands using military rigs between 9am and 7pm UTC. Visitors are quite welcome to stop by and visit.

In addition to Duxfords station which is commemorating D-Day, the HMS Belfast will also be active until the end of the month and using the callsign GB70DDAY. GB70DDL will be on the air from 1 to 28 June. The Belfast will be operation its station on all the HF bands in CW, SSB, PSK and other digital modes. The HMS Belfast station is going to operate by Riverway ARS in conjunction with the Stafford and Rugeley Sea Cadets at the cadets HQ in Stafford.

If you like the idea of amateur radio enthusiats operating portable from Nuclear bunkers, then the Riverway ARS is one to look out for. Their station is to be operated from four Royal Observer Corps Nuclear Bunkers until 9 June. GB1SNB from Shenstone, GB6GNB from Gonsall, from Rugeley and GB4SNB from Standon.

That just about wraps it up for Junes special RSGB events and looks like it will be an enjoyable one too!
