Hastings and District Amateur Radio Club 1959 – by John Heys G3BDQ

NATTER-NET-NOTES  No.2  DECEMBER  1959

Correction:  Last month said 5KW given up licence, quoting’ official records, but now seems these wrong. Saw Ken Ellis at RSGB Exbn says licence still held but station temp. dismantled. Sorry Ken! You remember we said looks funny.

Club-room:  Suitable room seen, applied for hiring it, waiting reply. Hope able get for reasonable rent. More details Club meeting and next issue these Notes.
Family Affairs Met at RSGB Exbn – Vernon 3MSK, Dorothy 3MER, Albert 3MGL, who live Gillingham, First met them on air /M trip Club stn 6HH. 3MQT worked them again when /A in GW, has since wkd another “Radio Family” Bedford, New Hampshire on 29 Mcs – QSL shows Allen (OM) W1TRS, Dot (XYL) W1WJK, Nancy (13-yr old daughter) K1BGQ. Know any more such families?

Finance:  First issue these Notes cost 5d print and post each copy. Future ones estimate under 3d each. For annual sub 5/- and 12 issues Notes to your door not bad value. You get more besides. Even so seems less members at meetings lately. What’s up? Stepped up program for you, now why not please try support. Club just can’t exist without good following — sink or swim depends entirely on good meetings, i.e., numbers. Turn up when duty etc allows.

Opinions:  These quart-in-pint-pot offerings so far favourable response – some have said: just the job; good effort; what we’ve wanted for long time; master- piece, etc. Editor blushes violently nevertheless thanks all for indulgence.

Blackout:  Odd happenings 40-m band 2. Dec. 1250 hrs band normal many G’s going strong, suddenly all sigs fade out, band dead in 5 secs not even BC stations readable! Fade lasted 10 mins then few weak sigs appear, reports 4 and 4 heard exchanged. Several stations all said thought Rx gone up the creak started tearing things apart. By 1307 band again normal; other bands seemed OK during fade-out.

DOX Commentary:  (6QB, 3MGQ pse ‘scuse Ed funny pun) Increasing rash Munro-type wiggle-sigs make 10-rn no go – rumour Ruskies improved on basic invention radio with new more elastic oscillator coil construction. Reminder DX-keen, keep eyes skinned for international contests BIG SIGS and exotics ready any time knock off weedy G3’s for odd point. New countries wkd this way by MGQ include HZ, 9G, CX. Another member rpts called CQ-Contest got 13 QSO’s including 2 new countries.
Wanted:  All-band constant-Z antenna, no harmonics radiated, self-earthing to all static wiz-bangs. Imposs, you say? Well what abt the MTX knitted antenna?

Likely Visitor: GC3KAV says in QSO with MGQ likely visit relatives Eastbourne spring 1960, will try I-to-I QS0 Hastings stns he’s wkd. Sends 73 to those he knows here. Thanks Jack, hope bcnu, With-us-again Dep:  Glad to rpt Dick managed get to Club mtg on 1 Dec, somewhat better. Seems some of his giblets to be subject of surgery later on. Tip-off: keep in touch with Dick if wanting spare tubes not listed makers handbooks.

BCI2:  During Sunday net 6 Dec one stn said expecting XYL bring coffee in shack. Middle afternoon, hours later, knock on front door somebody three blocks away, awful suspense feeling, asked had XYL taken coffee up to shack yet? Nice of ‘em consider Om’s welfare! Said their Rx nice plastic affair no antenna works FB.

MCC:  Hear that 6HH 13th this year (9th last year) despite 536 score, 92 more than previous effort. Leading stn fantastic score 674. We out on limb but no cause despondency, commendable result thanks to FB oprs. Seems we want 4-elmt beam for 160, put down steam-roller sig right direction – r.f. going over Channel entire waste energy. Schemes being brewed try improve posn next year. Crafty idea work /M invade enemy camp knock ‘em off then skidaddle pronto before twigged. G1BF carrying out research on auto-QRMer spread all over 160 with notch our QRG only, keep channel clear wipe out all others regardless so we all right Jack, up periscope.

40-m Catch: MQT late session 0051 hrs 6 Dec hooked EA4GZ (Madrid) fone QSO 5 and 9 rpts both ways. ‘4|GZ found hole in dreadful noises, clung to QRG like grim death, peeling off DX fine style. Suspect him using Madrid BC stn after hours! Sigs sounded that loud.

hastings-district-amateur-radio-club-1959Technigen:  HRO’s = BDQ found his not peaking on CW sigs, says tore innards out (sacrilege!!) found dry joint 2nd IF tranny. Remade joint. Opn successful, patient now OK – filter rings like bell.

Technigen contd:  Aerials = BDQ has designed Log Periodic antenna for 2m, 10.5 db gain, 55° beam to half-power points, design data Nov QST.  Says took two evenings doing abt 50 multiplication sums couldn’t find log tables. BDQ also gives gen below for tri-band ground plane cover 10/15/20, designed by SP3CK.- SP5HS DX type says it works FB. Radiator and radials 530 cms each. Stub 10.7 metres long shorted lower end. This, and feeder (any length) are 75 ohm coax. Trap coil 0.825 uH, condenser 64pf (presumably high-voltage ceramic disk type). Keep all connections short is essential. Note on coil: 11 turns 16 Enam close wound on 1/2” former gives calculated 0.9 uH Slight spacing of turns could pull down to 0.825uH

Idea Corner:  Two ways make ground plane: use 4-way back entry conduit box, radials screwed into the four ways, radiator on stand-off taking place of inspection cover. Alternative:  16g ali tray 6” square, radials bolted to sides (see sketch), radiator on stand-off fixed to top of tray.

Bright Idea Corner:  3FXA produced tape at meeting on 1 Dec – he’d recorded quiz questions. Mtg split into 2 teams fought ding – dong battle. Bill’s questions only needed YES – NO answers. Provoked several discussions. Bill hopes do more. Other members come forward with offers make tapes different subjects – this tape idea seems to be catching on. Ideal method for those shy to speak before audience.

Greetings:  The Officers and Committee take this opportunity to wish all members and other friends of the Club A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year, and thank everyone for their support during 1959. Your company is welcome in 1960.

Stop Press:  Whoa, Emma! Letter from Dartmoor confederate 3LMG hacked his way out, sends thanks for News Sheet to hand promises contributions from secret hiding place when hounds shaken off. Notice stamp on envelope cancelled by stripes.
