I knew I had one somewhere by Jakey G3JKY

Early in 2007 I answered an ad in Radcom from G4KMW and GORAE. Reg and Ray of the Pontefract ARC were engaged in restoring an ex-RAF T1154 transmitter and were trying to locate some large wire-wound resistors. They sent me a list of the part numbers and I was able to find several of them, still serviceable, so a deal was struck.

One of the components listed was a 14K tapped at 12K. I was sure I had one of these, but it was not in the box with the others. Incidentally the “box” was the cover from a TR1196 which was stripped for Parts in the 1950s. It’s IF transformers live on in my home-brew 1.8/3.5 MHz CW/SSB transceiver circa. 1963. However I digress!

Some time later I wanted to empty one of our water butts in order to move it to the front of the house. I proposed to use a siphon and knew I had a stopcock, which would make priming it easier. Looking in a box marked “Plumbing”, I found no such thing, it contained more wirewound resistors, including the missing 14K tapped at 12K!

This was not the end of the story however, as Ray had mentioned that they needed a yellow Pointer Knob for the TX. I was able to furnish a black one, which could be repainted. But… I had a vivid mental Picture of a yellow one. Unfortunately, the Picture had no background that might give a clue as to its whereabouts!

Later in the year, when Joyce and I arrived at our number 2 QTH, in New Zealand, the yellow knob turned up in box of bits and pieces that had been given to me by ZL2UL when he was about to move house!

The Knob has now joined the resistors in Pontefract, a much-traveled component, I can’t help wondering where else it has been in 60 Plus years!

When we bought the house in Takaka, Chris G1TBO commented “You’ve only done that to get a second garage to fill up”. I think this saga confirms his theory!
