New 70cm Hastings D-Star repeater GB7HE

Further exciting news for D-Star users, Dave Williams G8PUO of RILGES/EREC sent through this notice of the forthcoming GB7HE 70cm D-Star repeater which is currently in the vetting stage and likely to be installed on the existing GB3HE site in the near future.

This addition to the site further enhances the growing list of AR resources available to amateurs on the South East coast as D-Star interest continues to grow in the area. More information to follow soon.

From Dave G8PUO as below..

With the increasing interest in DSTAR locally and coverage issues from our GB7ES repeater towards Hastings (due to hill and woods), a new DSTAR repeater has been in discussion within the Hastings Area.

We have already a tried and tested site for GB3HE, so this makes for an obvious site to co-locate the additional new repeater.  Internet access has been a stumbling block but we now have a solution.

Frequencies
Due to total lack of available repeater frequency allocations on 2M in this area, the repeater needs to be on 70cm.

With GB3HE on the same site also on 70cm (within around 100-300 kHz from potential transmitter/receiver frequencies), we could have either looked at some expensive RF filters/engineering or more sensibly move GB3HE back to narrow split.  The latter increasing the spacing between GB3HE and GB7HE transmitters and receivers, so allowing filters to work better and improve overall RX performance.

As such, we are really pleased to let you know that two applications have been submitted today.

Repeater Keeper
We have a good RILGES HE working party in Hastings.  One of the team, Jamie M0JBR, has worked hard to get his DSTAR node operational (thanks also to Shane M1BFH), plus recently studying even harder to successfully gain his full licence.  It is fitting that in recognition of his commitment to the locals and the hobby, Jamie is now repeater keeper of the new GB7HE DSTAR Repeater.  Well done!

Repeater Hardware
Unfortunately hardware does not grow on trees and equally the RILGES repeater group does not have a pot to purchase a new repeater, so I have negotiated with Matt, M1CMN, to borrow a spare 70cm DSTAR repeater from the Folkestone Repeater Group.  Many thanks Matt!

This is great news in that we can get the repeater operational very quickly. We will then look at raising funds to buy a/the repeater, so will be motivating membership renewals and any kind donations towards this.  We will also need to replace the GB3HE filters for reliable narrow split operation and a plan is hopefully in place for this.

Antenna
With the main mast already supporting the GB3HE four stack and the new GB3JT DATV antenna going on top, we have to look at available options.

Adding another stack is possible, as is installing a 2nd mast (not preferred).  In the interim, we may use a folded dipole(s) on a stand-off(s) to reduce the effects of the mast.  Whatever we put up needs to be rugged due to the weather and elements up on the tower.  Will see what we can beg.

All membership renewals and kind donations are welcomed.

Regards,

Dave, Jamie and the the RILGES Repeater Group team.
