Ramblings from a G4 by Antony Turnbull G4CUS April 2008

March has been another busy month for DXpeditions. It is amazing how many people are prepared to visit out of the way places for the benefit of other fellow Radio amateurs, especially during the sun-spot minimum period. The VP6DX team from Ducie Island managed to break all records with 183,686 QSOs by the time they went QRT on 27th February. CW once again wins with 87,294 QSOs, followed by SSB with 86,140 QSOs and 10,252 RTTY QSOs.

During March I managed to work the 5T5DC expedition to Mauritania on 20 and 15mtr SSB and on 20mtr RTTY. Also the TX5C expedition to Clipperton on 20mtr SSB, and the 9X0R expedition to Rwanda on 20mtr and 15mtr SSB. I missed the one man (part-time) activity from 3X0E, Bouvet Island. Petrus Z66GCM has now left Bouvet and will be active from Marion Island (ZS8) for about a year. These trips of his are for work purposes and so amateur radio is only a spare time activity, not full blown DXpeditions.

As I write this, the big March contest (CQ WW WPX SSB) has yet to take place. In fact it is this coming weekend 29/30 March. I am packing Linda off to London for the day on Saturday, but she’s back sometime during the evening and so I suspect that there will not be too many QSOs on Sunday! Unfortunately I have to attend a Hospital Radio AGM on Saturday afternoon which will also curtail operating.

DX countries worked during March include :-

Iraq, Mauritania, Rwanda, USA, Morocco, Algeria, Canada, India, West Malaysia, Honduras, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Franz Josef Land, Turkey, Brazil, Armenia, Singapore, Indonesia, Jamaica, Taiwan, Laos, Asiatic Russia, Tunisia, Clipperton, Kazakhstan, Iceland, Djibouti, Philippines, Hong Kong, Guadeloupe, Argentina, Cuba, Colombia, Netherlands Antilles, New Zealand, French Guiana, St Lucia, and Israel.
