Ramblings from a G4 by Antony Turnbull G4CUS April 2009

The K5D Dxpedition to Desecheo Island (NA-095) caused a great deal of excitement (and QRM) on all bands and the final QSO total exceeded 115,000 which is amazing by anyone’s standards! I hope that you managed to work them on at least one band/mode. You can always check by going to their on-line log search facility at www.kp5.us . I managed to work them on 20mtrs CW and SSB and on 30mtrs CW. I had hoped to work them on RTTY as well but the QRM from stations that just kept calling without listening made copy almost impossible. They were working split but that didn’t stop people from calling on or too near their transmit frequency. However I was very pleased to have worked them at all for a new country.

For some time people have been trying to persuade me to put my log on Logbook of the world (LOTW) and e-qsl. A couple of months ago I got going on e-qsl and uploaded my log to that organisation and was surprised at the quick confirmations that I received back from QSOs going back many years. I was so impressed that I decided to join LOTW as well and upload my log to them. This was not quite so simple as one has to download a digital certificate first and send a copy of documents such as a passport and driving licence to ARRL HQ by post. The response was very quick though, and I was able to get going within a couple of weeks. Within a few minutes of uploading a digitally certified copy of my logbook I received a message to say that I had 244 countries confirmed for the DXCC award without even having to send a single QSL card. This makes claiming any awards so much easier. I have worked 326 countries so far and have most confirmed by QSL card which means I will have to go through my boxes of cards to sort out the countries that were not confirmed automatically by LOTW, a job I have been putting off for many years!

DX countries worked during February include:-

Desecheo Island, Senegal, Paraguay, Curacao, Brunei, Trinidad, Belize, Oman, China, Cuba, Hawaii, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Benin, USA, Grenada, Mexico, West Malaysia, Laos, Japan, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cape Verde, Suriname, Iran, Saint Martin, Guam, Martinique, Brazil, Australia, Philippines, Aruba, Djibouti, Chagos Island, Jordan, Hong Kong, Morocco and Asiatic Russia.
