Ramblings from a G4 by Antony Turnbull G4CUS August 2008

My HF operating this past month has been a little spasmodic to put it mildly. There have been days of no radio activity (plenty of other activity though) and days with hours spent hunched over the FT2000. I have also been doing quite a bit of short-wave listening whilst completing paperwork and QSL cards, listening to some of the 80 metre conversations can be very interesting. I was doing just this last week and learning all about the Titanic disaster all those years ago.

This was taking place on the RAOTA (Radio Amateur Old Timers’ Association) regular net. I found this so enlightening that I stopped what I was doing just to listen to the individual talking about the events of that tragic night. He had obviously researched the subject thoroughly. Many such conversations can be heard on this band at any time of day, conditions allowing of course.

I have seen adverse comments in the amateur press about old timers talking about their flower beds / vegetable plots or about their ailments, “ It’s not amateur Radio.” My answer to that is TUNE TO ANOTHER FREQUENCY! At least they are keeping their stations maintained and on the air.

The new BSARS shack at Brede is coming along well.  The walls are up and the roof is on.  Hopefully it won’t be too long before it is in full operation.

Jamboree on the air is not that far off. The 51st JOTA is being held on 18 – 19 October 2008.

Before that though is the Lighthouses and lightships on the air weekend on 16 – 17 August 2008. BSARS will be taking part as usual at Dungeness with the callsign GB1DLH. This is the 10th year of ILLW and I have to say I find it a very enjoyable event. More friendly than a contest and less pressure whilst making lots of contacts, hopefully.

I was active during the IARU World championships on 12 – 13 July mainly to work the RSGB HQ stations to give them a few points and to try for one of their awards. Much to my surprise I managed to work them on all (contest) bands and on both (contest) modes, CW and SSB, giving a maximum point score of 12. Those of you who worked GB7HQ can apply for an award in the following category :-
Bronze     –  worked GB7HQ on   3 band/modes
