Ramblings from a G4 by Antony Turnbull G4CUS August 2009

ramblings-of-a-g4-august2009The HERC Barbecue was a roaring success (excuse the pun) again, mainly due to the hard work of our Chairman and Editor and of course the sunny weather. William and Thelma were on-site before 08:00 on the Wednesday and by the time I turned up (much later) they had put some 5Mhz contacts in the log using William’s Clansman. The off-centre dipole strung up across the field and over the car park appeared to work well on various bands.

It was interesting erecting the tent in the rather strong winds. I’m glad that at least Thelma knew what she was doing! At lunch time Mike who had brought his mobile oven, baked us the usual chocolate cakes which were devoured rather too rapidly. Jakey meanwhile was busy making CW contacts on his Ten-Tec using the club call G6HH. I hope that he managed a slice or two of Mike’s delicious cake, I can’t remember if I had left him any.

Later in the day other members set up stations and at one stage there were five running simultaneously including John G8BQX on 6mtrs, Tony G4KLF with Steve M0SSR on HF, myself /mobile on HF and two walking around with their Clansman outfits strapped to their backs.

At Brede we had another success with Martin passing his foundation exam, sitting outside under a tree for shade. The scout hall was full of workmen at the time, finishing off a new kitchen extension. His brand new callsign M6MJU arrived within a few days.  Congratulations Martin, I expect that you will have had many qsos with your FT897d by the time this appears in print.
Towards the end of June I was very pleased to have at last made my first qso on 24Mhz using a WARC band trap dipole. This was with ZD7VC, the only station I have heard on the band for a long time. I have worked Bruce on 10, 15 & 20mtrs using my beam but it was nice to get him on the dipole for a new band.
