Ramblings from a G4 by Antony Turnbull G4CUS May 2008

I hope you enjoyed the ‘BIG’ one during the last weekend of March. I am of course referring to The CQ WW WPX SSB contest which as always took place when we went onto B.S.T. This is a good contest to pick-up all those weird and wonderful prefixes and a contest where our G or M prefixes are just as important as the DX! This is also where a computer logging program comes into its own, otherwise it can be very difficult knowing what country a callsign belongs to.

I did not spend as much time operating as I would have liked due to other commitments but having said that I did have a great time weeding out those elusive countries that are hard to find on an ‘ordinary’ day. The QRM was heavy of course and the use of the filters and IF shift were essential to get at the weaker signals, all part of the fun although frustrating at times. This contest has increased my monthly country score a little and enabled me to work some of the rarer islands. The CW version of this contest takes place towards the end of May.

Now that summer is hopefully approaching, I for one will be less active on the bands as the garden and sun beckons, and so my reports will probably be a little sparse in the coming months. However I am sure that there will be a little time for keeping the atmosphere warmed-up with RF around Westfield! I may even operate in the garden with my mobile rig (FT897) if it is warm enough.

DX countries worked during April include:-

United Arab Emirates,  Antigua, Guatemala,  St.Helena Island, Haiti, Barbados,
Marshall Islands, Anguilla, Solomon Islands, St.Kitts–Nevis, Guam, Saipan, Falkland Islands, Martinique, Monserrat, Cape Verde Islands, Taiwan,  Tunisia,
