Silent Key – John Rawden

Obituary from the Vital Spark newsletter, February 2011.

John Rawden sadly passed away on 7th January. He enjoyed the HERC lectures, in particular ‘bring your thing’ but hearing loss meant he missed out. His dad was an engineer, john-rawden1and at age 14 John surprised all when he repaired a bin-discarded radio. In the 60s John started Rawden & Co, Radio, TV, audio but the shop closed mid 70s. Continuing trading from John’s home, I (Liz) fondly remember driving out in a 3-wheeled van fixing Phillips G11 TVs for his few remaining customers: useful experience for an electronics student.

John answered phone queries if I got stuck on tech issues, through kind consideration john-rawden2of his then employer: Radio Communication Specialists, Tottenham, London. RCS closed a few years before John’s retirement but he and fellow redundant colleagues continued free-lance until his move to St Leonards-on-Sea in early 90’s. The photo is of him working (left) on a transceiver in Newham Hospital, used by midwives. John’s prime interest was computing & during the 80’s, joined Leytonstone Computer Club where he brought his kit-built Nascom 1. He took up the Sinclair QL, joining Quanta, and later became a Linux devotee.

John worked for the Vegan Society from 2001ish until their move about four years ago and attended Lip-reading classes in Priory St to help his communication. I met John in ’86 at a social club and thank HERC for helping us both maintain our interest in this hobby. He’s survived by his two daughters: Caroline and Penny, and three grand-children. All who knew and loved John will miss him enormously.

Liz Costa.
