The Story Behind the card #31 – A QSL from a King

This card was confirmation of a 1971 SSB contact by Eastbourne amateur G8KS (Les Hill now a ‘Silent Key’) with the late King Hussein The First of Jordan. King Hussein, licensed JY1 was one of the every small and select group of ‘Royals’ to hold amateur licences. The others being King Juan Carlos of Spain (EA0JC) and Hussein’s wife, Queen Noor (KY2).

The Kingdom of Jordan was formerly a mandate of Great Britain after WW1 and was then known as Transjordania, and it only became an independent country many years later. After 1921 it was ruled by Abdullah, a brother of King Feisal of Iraq, and he was formally recognised as an independent ruler in 1923.

King Hussein’s full title was Kin Hussein bin Talal of Jordan. He was born in 1936 and was educated in England, at a prep School in Hastings (which no longer exists) followed by a spell at Harrow School where he joined the local radio society.

As JY1 he contacted stations all over the world and often visited Britain. He was made an Honorary Member of the RSGB in 1970 and in 1993 gave an interview to RadCom. King Hussein operated in this country and also in the USA, Spain, Austria and Canada. Many operators could not initially believed that they had QSO’d a King and thought JY1 was a Pirate. They only later accepted their luck when Hussein’s QSL card arrived. King Hussein’s signature on his QSLs is Auto-machine written and all his outgoing cards were written out by his QSL manager, Mary Ann Crider, WA3HUP in Pennsylvania.
