Full Amateur Radio Licencees get larger 2m band

Yesterday, October 9th, Ofcom published a PDF statement which included the intention to release an additional 1mHz of spectrum to fully licenced radio amateurs in the 2m band on a temporary basis.

For full licencees, 2m band availability will be from 144-147MHz, though the new part of the spectrum from 146 to 147MHz is only available through a Notice of Variation.

As with all NoV’s, they can be applied for through the RSGB site from the end of October and further information will be released in the near future supporting this change to the 2m band.

Ofcom enables AM and SSB operation on Citizens Band 27MHz

I am sure that Citizens Band users will jump for joy with this news release.

Commencing Friday 27th June, Ofcom’s changes to the Wireless Telegraphy regulations now enables Citizens Band users to operate legally with AM and SSB on 27MHz, the allowed frequencies of which are the 40 CEPT Harmonised channels which are the same as the American 40 channels.

There has been much excitement and talk in the CB community, some of whom are more than pleased at being to operate legally using the latest CB transceivers which comply with the new regulations. There are already countless forum threads on the Internet which show that there is a lot of interest in this step forward for CB users, many of whom who are already looking forward to acquiring the latest compliant rigs from various manufacturers.

The new regulations now provide legal power limits of 4w ERP on AM and a useful 12w ERP on SSB.

RSGB Band Plan Changes

The RSGB have recently released an update to the band plan recently with some items of interest. There have been changes made to U.K. based HF usage in the 5mhz band plan and is being kept under review for the time being.

Changes have also been made following recent IARU Region 1 meetings which are targetted at the realignment of Echolink and Digital voice gateways in the 2m and 6m bands.

According to the RSGB there will be more details made available about these band plan changes in the next issue of Radcom.
