GB3EB repeater back on air and relocated to Uckfield

logo_rilgesDave G8PUO of RILGES/EREC sends an update regarding the popular GB3EB repeater.

GB3EB is now back on air and relocated to its new site in Easons Green, Uckfield.  This is good news and really nice to have the repeater running again following the church fire in December.

Due to the really poor weather conditions today, whilst the repeater has been installed and Echolink fully enabled, we were unfortunately not able to complete the antenna installation, so the repeater is currently operating on a temporary old antenna blowing in the wind and much reduced TX power.

Please do not take the current signal strength as final, as it the repeater is running low power.

The antenna will eventually be situated on a 40′ tower and based on the predicted coverage map, we should then have improved communications around the south downs from Brighton, Hove, Billingshurst, Horsham, Haywards Heath, Heathfield, Crowborough down towards Eastbourne, Battle, Bexhill and Hastings. As with any installation, it is always a learning curve, with lots of hidden time and tweaks to be made.

Many thanks to James G7VAE and Michael G7VAD, for allowing the repeater to be sited on their land.

We will continue work over the next week or so in order to make improvements, subject to the weather.

GB3EB – The Eastbourne 2m repeater could be back soon

Caught this over on the EREC forum, news from Dave G8PUO that GB3EB may be returning to service soon following a fire at the site which happened last year.

Unfortunately it appears that some of the repeaters internal circuitry which had been examined later, has in fact been corroded/covered with a fairly nasty conductive film caused perhaps by the circulated smoke during the fire. This will mean that the equipment will either have to go through what would be a fairly labour intensive repair process, or indeed necessitate replacements for the unusable hardware.

Dave G8PUO seems confident about GB3EB’s return to service and even mentioned that it could be back in a temporary working fashion just before the recent SERF event which was held on the 6th June.

You can keep up to date with the latest operational and detail info on the GB3EB repeater status page and via the RILGES web.

GB3EB goes offline due to fire at site

logo_rilgesNews came through via various sources over the last couple of days including a quick report from Paul M6PWD who spoke to Gordon (M3HXY) on GB3HE earlier today.

Sadly, a fire broke out at the St. Lukes Church site where GB3EB is located in Eastbourne and as such the repeater will obviously be offline until repairs and further arrangements are made to re-instate the repeater.

According to Dave G8PUO at RILGES who run the repeater GB3EB will go off-air Saturday 17th January and will also sadly mean that the planned installation of the new D-Star repeater GB7ES will be put on hold until the repair work at the Church has been completed in a few months time.

The repeater hardware itself is quite intact though will of course have to be removed for inspection and testing. Initial time-frames for the building repair works to be completed is expected to be at least three months.

Dave already has discussion underway with regards to the options available for the repeaters and has promised an update as soon as a route forward for them is found.

Best wishes go to Dave and the working party on Saturday who look as though they have quite a tricky job on their hands.
