The story behind the card Series 2 – No.1 Mount Athos

Recently I was fortunate to acquire several thousand QSL cards that had belonged to the late Ron Cooper, G0MSM. Ron had been a ‘King Pin’ in the IOTA organisation and many of his QSLs were for QSOs with stations on Islands Worldwide. He also seemed to be keen on contacting ‘Special Events’ or stations in unusual locations. I only took over the pictorial cards because such items are normally the most interesting. My first series of articles were based upon early and pre-WW2 cards and included few if any modern cards. G0NSM’s cards date from the late 1980s and go up to the year 2010.1 think you will find them just as interesting as the cards used for Series 1.

g3bdq-mount-athos-qsl-cardMount Athos lies at the Southern end of a finger-like peninsula that juts out into the Aegean Sea. It is about 80 miles South-east of Salonika and rises to a height of 6,332 feet. It is also known as Monte Santo. ~

Mount Athos is the location of several Greek Orthodox Monasteries and although now within Greece, before WW1 was in Turkey.
Each Monastery is either ruled by an Abbot who is elected for life, or instead by a Board of Overseers who are in Office for a term of years. In 1928 the population of Mt. Athos numbered 4,858.

In 1945 the garrison of German troops held out on the Mount until it was eventually liberated by a taskforce of Muslim Pathans (Indian Army)led by a British Officer who was Jewish and named Tony Abrahams.

Living within the Dochiariou Monastery is Monk Apollo who holds a ‘Ham’ radio licence SV2ASP/A who gets on the air on very few occasions. A radio contact with Monk Apollo will count as an ‘Entity’ for DXCC purposes as Mt. Athos is self governing like San Marino, The Vatican or similar enclaves. Its rarity makes it a significant ‘catch’ on the
amateur bands. The late G0MSM was very fortunate to contact and get a card from Monk Apollo. Personally I have never even heard Apollo and Mount Athos remains one of my few remaining DXCC targets. One can but dream!
