The story behind the card Series 2 – No.3 Principato di Seborga

There are three semi-autonomous ‘ countries’ within Italy that are Amateur Radio DX Entities in their own right and each have individual call sign prefixes that in no way suggest Italian geographical locations. Those radio entities are, The Vatican which is actually in Rome and which has a population of more than a million; the Sovereign Military Hospitaller  Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta (Phew.. . ) and San Marino which is located about 12 miles Southwest of Rimini. San Marino has a 24 miles long frontier which encloses an area of about 38 square miles. This place had a population of about 13,000 before WW2. The Order of St. John of Jerusalem is little more than a large house, the ‘Villa Magistrate al Aventino” located in Rome.

After the Napoleonic wars Seborga seems to have become forgotten but it still exists with its miniscule population of about 2,000 inhabitants. I think that it is about the size of Battle in East Sussex. Amazingly this small State has its own currency and its own motor car Registration Plates, and since 1995 its own Constitution.
This last development led to the setting up of an amateur radio station in 1999 which employed the amateur prefix ‘T00RM’. I was fortunate to contact this station in March of that year thinking I had bagged a new entity for DX country chasing purposes. Sadly the IARU the Governing Body of World Amateur Radio Regulations decided that Seborga was not accepted as a ‘Special Area ‘  or as a ‘Political Entity’ and that all contacts with the place were only to be considered as with Italy.

Despite this ruling my QSL card confirming contact with Seborga must surely become a rarity.
