The Tales of Flashover House – Escape from the Third Reich

It was Matrons annual holiday and by tradition she was off to visit her sister for a couple of weeks in Broadstairs. The Hams had just seen her into her taxi and waved her off to the station.

Then they awaited with some trepidation the arrival of the temporary carer who was to take her place. The carer when she arrived gave them little cause for rejoicing. She was dressed all in black, eagle of eye, and beak to match.

They helped her in with her luggage and, when everything was placed to her liking, she introduced herself.

“My name is Honoria Strutt but you may call me madam.”

“She looks to me more like Gretchen of the SS” said a fearless G3 who thought he was out of earshot.

“What did you say?” said Honoria, turning on him.

“I said you looked very fetching in that dress” said G3 using his wits to get him out of trouble.”

“So that we can get to know one another “continued Honaria “I will acquaint you with a few rules which will be enforced at all times.”

Bibs will be worn when eating soup.
No visits to the shops wearing carpet slippers.
False teeth are not to be left on the sideboard overnight.
And all unhealthy fatty food is totally banned.

“Right. Off you go to tidy your shacks, I will come to inspect them in half an hour.”

The words shack and tidy do not go very well together but the hams made the effort mainly by sweeping all the surplus components under their tables.

The following morning at breakfast mutiny was in the air. The residents were confronted with platefuls of uninteresting health food. There was not a rasher or a single sausage in sight. They refused to touch the stuff so Honaria singled out G2 as being the ringleader.

“Eat up your Muesli Mr. G2’

“Shan’t” said G2 harking back to the far off days when he used to defy his old Nanny.

“Don’t you say shan’t to me” shouted Honoria. ‘”Go and stand in the corner until I tell you to come out.”

“OK” said Honaria, You won’t eat your breakfast so I will take you on a long healthy walk. That will give you a good appetite for lunch which is a delicious carrot surprise”.

G2 moved to follow this instruction but the rest of the hams who considered themselves to be equally guilty tried to do likewise and there just wasn’t enough room for them all in the corner. By this time things were at a very low ebb and Rees Morgan noted will, dismay that the picture of Jill Dando on the front of his bed side locker was beginning to curl at the edges.

A few minutes later there they were marching two by two along the road with Honaria striding out in front.

“I wonder she doesn’t have us doing the goose-step” whispered Angus.

“I tried that once” said weasel “But I don’t recommend it. It takes the gusset out of your underpants.”

“It’s all right for you young seventy one year olds” wheezed G2 struggling along somewhere at the back. But I am ninety and what is more I am missing all my skeds. on 80 mtrs.”

“Are you not feeling the glow of rosy-cheeked health?” asked Rees Morgan.

“No. What I am feeling above all is the Grey pallor of Impending doom.” complained G2,

Mercifully they soon turned for home. Honaria was right. Walking does give one an appetite although they were not altogether inspired by the thought of the carrot surprise lying in wait for them back at base.

Suddenly they were aware of a sweet perfume wafted from a side street. Forget about the Eau-de Cologne and the spices of the Orient. This was the scent from which dreams are made. Honaria gazed in wonderment on this magical place. She hesitated, but only for a second. “OK chaps. You win. Who wants Cod and chips and who wants Haddock. Do you all take salt and vinegar, and by the way please call me Flossie!”
