The Tales of Flashover House – The Old Flame

The hams were returning from the pharmacy with their prescriptions. As they manhandled the large carrier bags through the doorway. Matron was heard to remark. “If you get much more medication you will have to collect them from the chemists in a wheelbarrow, and, by the way, Mr. Weasel, there was a phone call for you a few minutes ago. It was a woman’s voice and she said that you would remember her by her maiden name Alice Bullstrode. She is passing through town and she is hoping to call and see you”.

“That brings back a few memories.” said Weasel “She was a biggish girl and very out-going. You will enjoy meeting her. I remember that we used to wander hand in hand and she would whisper sweet nothings to me as we watched the moonlight dancing on the ripples of the Grand Union Canal, Believe me you have a treat in store.”

There was excitement in the lounge as the hams awaited the arrival of this vision of loveliness, They did not have long before there was a ring at the bell and, as Matron opened the door, there was a loud cry. “Matron lead me to lover boy.” and into the lounge came an immense woman with mauve, green, and yellow hair, She made straight for Weasel. “Come to my arms you rascal,” she cried “Pucker up those rosebud lips and give me a big smackeroo like you did that night in the back row of the Odeon.”

“I don’t recall.” started the shattered Weasel “Don’t tell me you have forgotten already,” laughed Alice. “The usherette shone her torch on us, sent for the Manager and in no time at all we were out on the street.” “Ah yes.” said Weasel “And the following day your Father threw me out of your home with the rough end of a blunderbuss. By the way. How is your dear Father, the Colonel?”

“Very well thank you.” said Alice “Does he still have the blunderbuss?” “Oh yes. He never goes anywhere without it. He’s outside in the car and, even as we speak I am sure that his trigger finger is itching.” “Don’t leave him outside” said Matron “Ask him in for a cup of tea.”

G2 went to do the honours and from the door came a very military voice demanding. “Where is that Weasel, that snake in the grass, philanderer, and despoiler of womanhood. Ah Weasel my dear boy how nice to see you again.”

“And you too Colonel. It’s been a long time.” At this point the whole thing turned into an old pal’s act with Weasel and the Colonel laughing and slapping each other on the back, much later and when the final farewells had been said, the Hams returned to the lounge where Weasel faced a barrage of questions.

Matron opened the batting. “Why is the man who chased you away from his daughter with a blunderbuss suddenly your bosom chum?” “Well.” said Weasel. ‘It was a long time ago. Alice was coming on a bit strong with me and the conversation kept turning to the subject of marriage. This didn’t fit in with my plans at all. Having just seen the lady in question I am sure you will understand. On the other hand for some reason I can’t make out, the Colonel did not regard me as the sort in law of his dreams so we cooked up this blunderbuss episode and everyone went away happy “All except poor Alice’ said Matron Don’t worry too much about her.’ said Weasel. ‘She has last married her fourth husband. That was him out in the car wearing a worried expression.”
