The Tales of Flashover House – Weasel. Man of Mystery.

The other residents couldn’t make head or tall of it. but there was the evidence right before their eyes. Weasel had suddenly become popular with the young generation.

Until a couple of weeks ago, they had regarded him as public enemy number one and a legitimate target for their empty crisp wrappers and discarded drink cans but lately they just could not get enough of him. If they passed by while he was in the garden, it was all smiles and waving hands and just recently, three of them would knock the door on their way home from school, to see if he was coming out to play.

“I wonder if he has got himself a job as a scoutmaster?”, suggested Matron.

“No, not him,” said Rees Morgan, “He wouldn’t know a woggle from a sheep-shank.”

“I think I have the answer,” said Angus. “He mentioned to me some time ago that in his younger days, he used to be pretty good at table-tennis. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that he is doing a bit of coaching round at tile youth club.” That seemed to be a reasonable theory so they decided to settle for that.

Then a few days later, matron returned from her weekly shopping expedition looking all flushed and excited.

“What’s up,” asked Angus, “You don’t usually get into tills slate buying a few sprouts.”

“Well.” said Matron, “You would be excited if you had seen what I have just seen. I was just coming out of the supermarket when heard a plaintive voice cry “Penny for the guy Miss”, I turned to see a group of urchins and, to be quite honest, I thought their guy was above average so I tossed fifty pence into their inverted base-ball cap”.

“As I turned away, out of the corner of my eyes I could have sworn that the guy winked at me. Pull yourself together woman, I said to myself. How can a bundle of old rags possibly wink at you? I tried to dismiss the matter from my mind and then blow me if it didn’t do it again. So I went closer to have a good look.”

It was the jumper that gave the game away. Weasel is the only man know who can achieve that delicate blend of egg, mayonnaise, and tomato ketchup down the front of a garment. I whispered in his ear, “Just you wait till I get you home! …………suppose he hasn’t arrived yet?”

“No”, said Rees Morgan. “But according to what you have just told us, it seems that he is on the night-shift so he probably won’t be back for an hour or so”.

Weasel returned in the late evening and to be truthful, he didn’t have the appearance of a terrified man. He was in fact quite chirpy I suppose you know you have disgraced us all said Matron, “Oh, I wouldn’t say that.” said Weasel. “As a matter of fact after years of searching, I have found the perfect job. I can wear my old clothes the older the better, I don’t have to wash and I can go to sleep in the form’s time, The hours are pretty good too, just seven days a year and, in addition to that I get twenty five percent of the takings, I tell you it is a man’s life out there on the pavement.”

“You make it sound like a recruiting poster”, said Angus. I’m glad you mentioned that.” said Weasel “You have reminded ms of something. I will not be available on Saturday night. I wonder if you will stand in for me”? “XXXXIXXXXOOOO” Roared Angus which translates from the Gaelic as “Not b….. likely!” I suppose there is no chance of me getting back my fifty pence enquired Matron“. Not a hope laughed Weasel, “I bought a rocket with It on my way home!”
